Super 8's Cricket 2011
Tuesday 18th October
Monivae Boys A
The Monivae A side, coached by Mr. Michael Harms had a successful day winning two of three matches. The boys defeated Heywood and Good Shepard and lost to Balmoral. Shannon Jaescke had the best individual score with 66 whilst Tim Goodman made a notable 28 off three delivieries in one of the match's, made possible by the scoring system used in Super 8's. All bowlers devlivered well and made it difficult for the batsmen to score in all games. With a lose the Monivae A team failed to progress to the finals.
Monivae Boys B
The Monivae B side, coached by Monivae Cricket Captain Ben Noske started the day well winning against Heywood C 135 to 58. Rory Steff made 32 and Nick Armstrong made 27. A big score in the next game from Portland Secondary was too much to overcome with the final score Monivae 138 to Portland 178. Scott Addinsall made 35 and Rory Steff again impressed with 26. An odd draw saw the B team have a bye giving them two wins and one loss and unfortunately they didn't advance to the final. Better bowlers for the day were Angus Noske and Nick Armstrong.
Girls Super 8's
The Girls team played three games in the preliminary round. Winning their first game against Baimbridge 121 runs to 49, their second against Portland Secondary 130 to 54 runs and their final game against Heywood 130 to 85. Being one of only two undefeated teams in the preliminary the girls played Bayview (Portland) in the final.
Captain Regan Walker won the toss and elected to bat, a smart move after Nicky Lowe and Megan McFarlane added 33 runs for the first pair. The girls looked to be in control of the match but some pressure late in the game by the Bayview bowlers had Monivae struggling to score before Regan Walker and Laura Addinsall picked up 17 runs against Bayview's best bowlers. After their 8 overs Monivae was 86 runs.
A great opening spell of bowling had Bayview well behind with Zoe Astbury and Kate Lewis conceding only 6 runs in the opening two overs. It wasn't to be all Monivae's way with the next two overs conceding 29 runs and letting Bayview back into the match. This was before Megan McFarlane and Gabrielle Higgins both bowled wicket maidens leaving Bayview requiring 50 runs in the final two overs. Final score was Monivae 106 (every wicket taken adds 5 runs to your score) defeating Bayview 58.
The girls now progress to the Zone finals on November 9.
The team consisted of:

GSSSA 20/20
Monivae entered two teams for the GSSSA 20/20 cricket competition in 2011. The First XI (top) played superbly to post two easy wins against Casterton and Baimbridge. The Second XI (bottom) won its first game against Good Shepherd and lost to Hamilton College.
The First XI made an imposing 169 against Casterton. Michael Close top scored with 39. Other notable contributions were made by Thushira Gammune 34 and Tom Irwin 27. Casterton were quickly 4 for 14, with Niall Ashby the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 9 off 3 overs. Jayson Bensch and Shannon Jaescke each took 2 wickets. Casterton were bowled out for 65.
In the First XI's next game Jordan Nice took 4 wickets in 9 balls to tear Baimbridge apart. After 20 overs Baimbridge made 86. Stephen Craig picked up 3 wickets and Niall Ashby and Sam Beavis 1 each. Monivae passed the score in the 12th over with one wicket down. Tim Goodman top scored with 38 in a 63 run opening partnership with Michael Close.
The Second XI also began positively with Jock Cleary, decked out in his blazer and cricket collar turned up, winning the toss and looking the gentlemanly part. Monivae scrapped together 111 off its 20 overs. Dan Higgins made 19 at the top of the order, while Angus Noske 14 and Jackson Hay 13, made important contributions at the bottom.
Wickets fell quickly for Good Shepherd and were bowled out for 101. Best with the ball was Tristan Pickering, taking 1 wicket at a very economical 3 runs per over.
In its next game, the Second XI faced a strong College team. Scoring at 10 runs an over for the first 10, College completed its 20 overs with a score of 180. Josh Kohn batted well for 22 in the boys' efforts to run down College's big total. After 15 overs, the Second XI was bowled out for 70.
The First XI will meet College in a wintery final on Monday, 2nd May at Myrniong, beginning at 3pm. Come along and watch an entertaining game of cricket against two teams that have built a very strong rivalry in the 20/20 format.
