Monivae College has a strong history of excellance in netball. With Monivae sides represented in the Hamilton Junior Netball Association Saturday morning competition and the Hamilton Indoor Natball Association, the College is well represented in local competition.

Monivae also competes every year in the Waverly International Netball Championships (formerly the Australasian Schools Netball Championships) and the Victorian Schoolgirls Netball Championships with the results from both events unequalled by any other school in the State.

Monivae College 2nd at Schools State Championships 2011

On Monday 19th Septemeber, the Monivae College Year 9 & 10 school girls netball team competed in the state final for the Netball Victoria Schools Championships. Monivae had previously qualified for the finals day at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne after a successful day at the qualifiers in Ballarat mid August.

After travelling to Melbourne on Sunday night the girls were rested and ready to play on Monday morning. The competition was made of two pools, and within each pool all teams played one amother in a 2 by 7 minute half game. The top two placed teams from each section then moved on to the semi finals. Within their pool, Monivae played 7 games against the likes of Gennazzanno College, Avila College and Sacred Heart Geelong, coming out with five wins, a loss and a draw. This meant that moving on to the semi finals would come down to percentage on the ladder, and Monivae managed to scrape in at second place on the Pool A ladder.

The team went into the semi final pumped, knowing that this had placed them in the top four teams in the state of Victoria. Coming up against an undefeated Catholic College Wodonga, the girls played with great determination, ball skills and fight for the ball, pulling off brilliant intercepts and rebounds to keep them in the game. Monivae went into the second half with a lead of two goals, and in a very close half managed to hold the lead to win by one goal, 11-10. This brilliant performance earned the team a place in the grand final, to play off for the top two positions in the state.

In the grand final, Monivae faced a very fit Emmanuel College, the two teams had played earlier in the day with Monivae losing by eight goals. An improved performance in the grand final saw Monivae down by four at half time, with a comeback still in sight. Unfortunately, Emmanuel were too good on the day, winning the state title 15-8.

The middle school team consisted of: Shanae Guthrie (captain), Sophie Thornton, Georgia McLennan, Zoe Astbury, Nicky Lowe, Katelyn Lewis, Gorgia Sealey, Alanna Cottrill, Abbey Shannon and Ashlee Van Wegan. Coach: Lauren Handreck and Manager: Jo Van Wegan.

Second place in the entire state is a fantastic achievement and the girls should be incredibly proud of the sportsmanship they displayed and the way they performed on the day. A big thank you must go to Mr McKinley for driving the bus to and from Melbourne and Jo Van Wegan for being our wonderful team manager.

Waverley International Netball Championships - 2011

On Monday 4th July, whilst the majority of Monivae College students were enjoying the freedom of school holidays, a team of 10 students travelled to Melbourne to compete in the annual Waverley International Netball Championships, beginning on Tuesday. With a very youthful side, having six out of the ten girls being Middle School students, Monivae gained great experience from competing in the Senior Girls Division at the Championships. The way such young team shaped together to play against year 11 and 12 students was a true credit to the girls.

This year the first two days of Preliminary Rounds of the Senior Championships consisted of four sections, and during these rounds Monivae played five games of 4 by 10 minute quarters. Throughout the five qualifying matches, Monivae came up against colleges from South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria, only dropping one game to Immanuel College from Adelaide. This meant that Monivae finished second in their division and would move on to the Qualifying Rounds where the competition would pick up a pace on the Thursday.

The Monivae girls came out firing in the top division gaining a comfortable win over SEDA Richmond, 36 goals to 25. The next round Monivae faced a classy unit that was St. Francis Xavier College. The girls dug deep for the entire game, but the speed and ball movement of St. Francis Xavier, who went on to play off in the Grand Final, could not be matched, being defeated 41-22. Although the next game started off slow due to harsh weather conditions, Monivae managed to regroup and defeat SEDA Albert Park, 34-22, with the team finishing second in their pool. This meant that Monivae would now play off for positions 5th-8th for the tournament.

Friday was semi final time against St. Patricks College of Tasmania. This game was a close tussle, with the ball swinging backwards and forwards down the court due to intense defensive pressure by both sides. At half time, Monivae led by four goals, and with the margin staying roughly the same for the rest of the match, Monivae managed to pull off a brilliant display of netball, winning 32-29.

The final game of the tournament was a placing final to decide whether Monivae would finish 5th or 6th for the tournament. Coming up against Avila College, Monivae came out strong to hold the lead by six at half time. A quiet third quarter by the girls, saw Avila creep back into the game to make it a three goal difference at ¾ time, leaving the fourth quarter a battle of possession. Monivae managed to maintain the lead, winning fifth place, 29-26, a fantastic effort.

Congratulations to all of the Monivae girls on their brilliant efforts throughout the week. The team consisted of: Anna-Grace Close (Captain), Sophie Thornton, Shanae Guthrie, Gorgia Sealey, Alanna Cottril, Georgia McLennan, Molly Kent, Sarah Noske, Brittany McIntosh and Zoe Astbury.

A big thank you must go to Miss Rebecca Fisher and Miss Lauren Handreck for giving up their holiday time to coach and manage the team.

School Girls Netball Championships 2011

On Monday 15th August, 36 students and a number of parents and staff from Monivae College attended the School Girls Netball Championships in Ballarat. Like every other year, Monivae entered four teams in the competition with two teams in the Junior school section and one team in both the Middle and Senior school sections. Each team played seven or eight games throughout the day in a round robin, with each game consisting of two by seven minute halves.

Year 11 and 12 Results:
The senior Monivae squad played eight games for the day, playing four teams twice. In the first half of the rounds Monivae defeated Damascus College, Ballarat Grammar and Bambridge College. The fourth game was a hard fought tussle against the Hamilton and Alexandra College, with a great degree of physically and determination shown by both teams in this game, Monivae went down by seven goals. In the second half of the day, Monivae defeated the three previous schools once again and then turned around with high spirits and managed to defeat Hamilton College by a small margin. The sportsmanship, skill and determination for the ball was of a high class, not only in this game but throughout the entire day. The girls are to be congratulated in the way they held themselves in the mentally and physically straining battles and should be proud of the magnificent display of netball they put on throughout the day. Monivae finished second on the ladder.
Better players for the day: Teagan Lang and Molly Kent, with honourable mentions going to the entire team.

Year 9 & 10 Results:
Like the senior squad, the middle school girls played four teams twice, to total eight games for the day. In the first half of the day Monivae defeated Damascus, Bambridge and Ballarat Grammar all by significant margins, showing strength all down the court. It was against Hamilton College that the team got off to a slow start and made minor mistakes, to go down by one goal. However, following in the footsteps of the senior side, the girls lifted in the second half of the day to finish with seven wins out of eight games. With Hamilton College facing a draw, this put Monivae on top of the ladder, to proceed through to the Finals Day in Septemeber. A fantastic effort shown by the girls throughout the day.
Better players for the day: Abbey Shannon and Georgia McLennan.

Year 7 & 8 (Monivae 1) Results:

Monivae 1 in the junior section played seven games for the day, against a number of different schools from the Ballarat/Hamilton region. The girls played some great netball to win four of their seven games, only going down to Ballarat Grammar, Hamilton College and Monivae 2. Well done to the girls for giving one hundred percent in all of their games, finishing fourth on the ladder.
Better players for the day: Rikki Oswald and Tayla Guthrie

Year 7 & 8 (Monivae 2) Results:
Monivae 2 had a brilliant day of netball, growing as a team as the day went on. The girls managed to win five of their seven games. A big highlight of the day was when Monivae 2 defeated Monivae 1 in Round 4 of the competition. This proves that with great determination and a positive attitude on the court, the girls stepped up to any challenge thrown at them throughout the day to play some good netball and finish third on the ladder.
Better players for the day: Teagan McLure and Sophie Newell

A massive thank you must go to our coaches Jody Roth, Miss Fisher, Miss Handreck and Mrs Macgugan, as well as our team managers - Jo Van Wegan, Jenny Huf, Cathy Ferguson and Jacki Kermeen. Also to our umpires Rebecca Grayson and Jenny Spark. Your help throughout the day was greatly appreciated.

Good luck to the Year 9&10 team who have qualified to compete in the Finals Day in Melbourne on 19th September.

Waverly International Netball Championships - 2010

Whilst most students were relaxing during the first week of the holidays, 17 Monivae students travelled down to Melbourne to compete in the Waverley International Netball Championships.

The squad departed on the first Monday of the school holidays (28th June) and starting the championships on the Tuesday. This year Monivae entered two teams to compete in the senior girls division. Throughout the championships Monivae had the opportunity to compete against a range of high quality opponents, including several International (Sri Lanka and New Zealand) and numerous interstate school such as; QLD, SA and NSW, with over 40 teams competing this year.

The championships consisted of 4 sections, in which all teams compete in a preliminary round for each of respective section(s). Over the 2 days of the preliminary rounds, the Monivae squad played between 7 - 8 games (plus 4 games throughout the finals series) in which games consisted of 2 by 15min halves with a 1 minute break at half time, with a game break in between matches.

Throughout the preliminary rounds Monivae (1) only conceded one game which allowed them to finish second in their division. Monivae (2) which was heavily hit by injury, which resulted in the team playing with 6 players for several matches finished 7th in their section. These girls are to be congratulated on their efforts during this time, although playing with a player down, not one player on the court conceded their position. These girls displayed great resilience and determination which are great qualities to have.

Qualifying rounds

On day three of the competition both Monivae teams competed in the qualifying rounds against all the other teams from the four other sections. Monivae (1) was playing off in the top division, whilst Monivae (2) was playing off in division two.

The competition during the qualifying rounds was fierce with Monivae (1) playing in a tightly contested game against Rowville with the game being tied at the final siren. Monivae regrouped to win the remaining two games with only percentage separating the two top teams. Fortunately Monivae (1) had the superior percentage to snatch first position, which resulted in them reaching the grand final play offs for 1st through to 4th.

Although Monivae (2) was restricted through injury, Brittany Holmes, who came to the event as a spectator, heeded the call for help and played the final two days of play. This allowed Monivae (2) to play more consistent netball, which resulted in them winning two from the three games to play off for 17th - 20th position.

Grand Final playoff

Monivae (1) faced a physically bigger Williamstown team in the first semi- final and the game was played at a frantic pace. Williamstown used their power and strength to push the Monivae girls over the court. The girls can hold their heads up high in the manner in which they conducted themselves during this game. They displayed great sportsmanship and continued to fight until the final siren.

Monivae (1) then played St Francis Xavier for the 3rd - 4th position. The team regrouped to play more consistent and controlling netball and went into the final half one goal ahead. Monivae controlled the second half for most of the 15 minutes, however, a 5 minute lapse in concentration in the middle of the quarter, saw St Francis establish a 10 goal lead. Once again the girls fought fiercely for the final five minutes to only be defeated by 6 goals.

Monivae (2) was playing off in the division two section for positions 17th - 20th. Although the girls were feeling tired, they were determined to finish the championships on a high. They produced there best two games of the championships to comfortably win both games to claim 17th position, or number one in the second division. A fantastic effort by these girls, whose netball improved throughout the championships, and gave them an insight on how to play stronger and competitive netball.

Monivae (1) Team members: right

A big thank you must go to Leanne Perry. Leanne drove the bus down to Melbourne and transported the students to and from the venue each day. She also scored all the matches for Monivae (1), Leanne's support was greatly appreciated. A special mention must also go to Mrs King, who coached Monivae (2) and also helped with the transportation of students to and from the event. Without the the support of both Leanne and Pam, Monivae would not be able to attend these great events, their time and effort throughout the week was fantastic.

On the final day of competition, Monivae had qualified 2nd which resulted in them reaching the play-offs for 1st through to 4th.

First Semi Final: Monivae v St Francis

From the first whistle, the game was fast, fierce and dominated by the defence of both teams. At half-time Monivae had a slim lead of one goal and needed to step up a gear if they wanted to playoff in the grand final. In the second half Monivae responded and played more direct, controlled netball to exert their dominance to win twenty five to seventeen goals.

Grand Final: Monivae v Williamstown High School

The game started at a fast pace and the defensive effort from all players forced many turnovers. At half time it was five goals the difference in Williamstown's favour, although the score board wasn't a true reflection of how tight the game was. Victorian Schoolgirls Netball Championships (Regionals) - 2009

Held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkeville, Monivae entered four teams, two in the year 7/8 section, and a team each in the Year 9/10 and 11/12 sections.

Year 11 and 12 Results:

The senior squad played five games throughout the day and faced tough opposition in the first two matches from Avila and Siena College. The Monivae versus Avila match was a close tussle with both teams displaying fierce aggression towards the ball. The Monivae girls had previously played Avila at the Waverley International Championships so the match was always going to be close. Going into the break Monivae had a one goal lead, the game was physical and tight, but in the final minutes of the game Avila seemed to control the passages of play, and grabbed the lead. A goal after the siren by Nicole Te Maipi ensured that Monivae came away with a draw.

For the senior team to make finals they needed to win the remainder of their matches. Percentage would decide which team (Avila or Monivae) would progress through. With this in mind, Monivae faced further tough opposition against Siena College. The game started at a fast pace, though Monivae ran away with the game in the second half to outscore their opponents 8 goals to zero. Going into the last game, Monivae had a one goal percentage lead over Avila. Knowing this the girls once again played tight, attacking netball to win by 18 goals to progress through to the state final.

Better Players: Rhianne Lewis and Emma Sommerville

Year 9 and 10 Results:

The middle school squad played some nice attacking netball for the day. The defenders played cooperatively which forced many opposition turnovers. This gave the goal shooters many opportunities to score. The squad had two wins, a draw and two very close losses for the day. Throughout the day, the Monivae squad developed strong and quick passes, which combined well with direct and confident leads.

Better Players: Claire Block and Anna-Grace Close

Year 7 and 8 (Team A) Results:

The junior competition was divided into two sections, which enabled both Monivae teams to play in different divisions. Team A played seven matches and won five. Monivae A had a tough section having to play Ringwood SC and Kilbreda College. The squad faced Ringwood first and after a slow start, the girls found their rhythm, with the defence end working overtime, creating lots of turnovers. Monivae had a slim lead of one goal going into the break. In the second half both teams played tight netball and the game went goal for goal. Ringwood finished the stronger to win by three goals.

Better Players: Regan Walker and Allana Cottrill

Year 7 and 8 (Team B) Results:

The Monivae B team faced some tough and strong opposition for the day. To the girls' credit, they competed in all games with determination and never stopped trying for the entire day. Some of the games were very close, with only a goal separating the two teams. The day provided the girls with a great opportunity to further develop their netball skills.

Better Players: Viannah Ferguson and Nickayla Lowe

Victorian Schoolgirls Netball Championships (Finals) - 2009

Taking on the best teams from across the State would be a challenge for the Monivae Year 11 & 12 Girls team who were the only Monivae team to qualify from the Regional round.

Throughout the day, Nicole Te Maipi, Eve Duckmanton and Ann-Grace Close combined well in the goal circle, providing strong holds and accurate shooting. Marni Perry, Lauren Handreck, Grace Delaney and Maddy Cleary provided plenty of drive and defensive pressure through the midcourt. They moved the ball from defence into attack with precision and determination and forced their opposition into several turnovers. The defensive wall of Emma Sommerville and Rhianne Lewis was sensational to watch driving out with speed to inflict several punishing intercepts on their opposition. Their rebounding ability gave the Monivae squad several extra scoring opportunities.
