Compulsory Year 9
Year 9 English is all about genres. Each semester you will study a single genre in-depth. Genres on offer include crime, science fiction, Gothic/horror, and dystopian fiction. You will study a novel, a movie, comics and graphic novels - any medium your genre is published in really. You will complete a creative task, an analytical task, and a persuasive task. Over the course of the year you will have completed two in-depth studies of a genre.

Literature: Close reading
Back in 1967 famous literary critic Roland Barthes said “the author is dead.” A bit harsh, maybe, but what he meant was that you, the reader, are the most important person. In this course on close reading, you’ll learn techniques for reading between the lines, discovering new meaning in texts, and pushing yourself beyond the skills learned in mainstream English. Students wishing to study VCE Literature must complete at least one major elective.
Literature: Critical theory
Literature focuses on the meanings of texts, how texts connect to one another, and the power of the reader. Studying literature broadens your understanding of important movements such as Marxism, Feminism, and Postcolonialism and is vital for anyone interested in issues to do with gender, race, and power. At least one Literature major is a required subject for anyone who wishes to go onto VCE Literature, and a great choice for any students who love to read.

Journalism
The journalism minor elective will give you the skills and the experience needed to tackle the world of print and online journalism. You will study journalism from traditional print to modern-day media such as blogs, social media and video. Along the way you will create, edit and publish a Monivae College magazine, newspaper and/or blog and will speak with experts from the industry. Perfect for anyone interested in a career in the media, writing, or publishing.
Creative writing
Sick of staring at a blank page? Do you know you have great ideas, but struggle to get the words out? Or are you a confident writer searching for a way to get yourself heard? The creative writing elective will give you the opportunity to create and publish your own texts, giving you skills in a field of your choice such as fiction, poetry, or online writing. You’ll hear from real authors, and by the end of the semester every student will publish at least one piece of writing.
Mathematics
Year 9 Mainstream Mathematics
In Year 9 Mainstream mathematics you will study equation solving, Pythagoras’ theorem, algebra (expansion, factorisation, algebraic fractions), trigonometry, geometry, indices, measurement, financial mathematics, linear graphing and statistics. Your assessment tasks include topic tests, skills assignments, problem solving tasks, application tasks and end of semester examinations. You must have a scientific calculator.
Year 9 Consolidating Mathematics
This unit is designed for students who need the opportunity to improve their basic skills and consolidate their knowledge. Teacher recommendation is required for you to study this subject. You will study equation solving, Pythagoras’ theorem, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, indices, measurement, financial mathematics, linear graphing and statistics. Assessment tasks include tests, skills assignments, problem solving tasks, application tasks and examinations. A scientific calculator is required.
Science
Compulsory Year 9
In Year 9, students consider the operation of systems at a range of scales. They explore ways in which the human body as a system responds to both internal and external change, by investigating the role of the brain as the main control centre responsible for coordinating the body’s reactions to different stimuli. Students look at the Requirements for life through the process of Photosynthesis and Respiration. They learn that matter can be rearranged through chemical change and that these changes play an important role in many systems. In Electricity students are introduced to the concept of electricity generation and alternate methods of electricity generation, how electricity flows in a circuit and how circuits are important to digital technologies.

Environmental science
This elective will have students gain an understanding of how the environment is impacted by human activities and what we can do to reduce this impact. Students will monitor the local environment with several visits to a local wetland and participate in a project in conjunction with Monash University. Take the opportunity to discover your local environment and learn how to make a positive impact on our environment while developing skills that will be useful in the VCE Environmental Studies or Biology course.
Agricultural studies
Reviewing local agricultural farming systems, the technology in use now and what could be used in the future. Review alternative farming systems that could be used to add an additional income stream to traditional farming systems. Understand the impact of farming on climate and how to reduce our impact on the environment. Students will use this knowledge and skills to develop an exciting and alternative farm plan for the Monivae Farm. This course will be ideal for students who wish to go onto a Certificate course in Agriculture or Horticulture or VCE studies in Agriculture, Horticulture or Environmental Science.
Psychology: Opening minds
This course studies developing areas within the field of psychology. Students examine three contemporary disciplines, including an introduction to the fields of forensic psychology-“The dark side”, sports psychology-“Motivation and confidence”, positive psychology-“The pursuit of happiness”. Activities will include completion of psychological experiments and research tasks. This course provides students with useful psychological skills and prepares students for VCE Psychology.

The inner workings of animals
The Inner Workings of Animals elective involves investigating the body systems of a range of animals, from simple to complex. You may compare the changes in structural features such as eyes, hearts, skeletons, and reproduction in insects through to mammals. You will gain skills and experience in dissecting and using microscopes. This elective suits anyone interested in Biology, Vet Science, Health and agricultural Science.

STEM (Digital technologies)
A virtual world is out there for us to look at and create. The worlds of VR, Gaming design, 3D cameras and 3D printing will all feature in this semester-based study. You may find an area within the content that you would like to focus on and develop creating your own learning as you go. A flexible and independent approach to your learning can be catered for. A future enrolment in the STEM area would see the development of a personalised learning plan for you, dealing with a specific topic.
Forensics
In this elective you will follow through the realistic processes of analysing a crime scene, by undertaking experiments including blood splatter, fingerprints, and DNA profiling, the major component will involve you being the first person at a crime scene and solving a mystery death. By the end of this unit, you will have enhanced your understanding of scientific procedure and improved your scientific experimental skills. Perfect for anyone interested in a career in the science area.
Agricultural skills
Students will learn a variety of basic skills necessary to begin their career in an agricultural industry and around the backyard. These skills include, chemical handling, animal handling, simple tools care and maintenance, weather, its impacts, fencing and propagation of plants.
This course will lead directly to the Agricultural studies elective and into a Certificate course in Agriculture or Horticulture.

Compulsory Year 9
History and civics and citizenship
Students will explore the making of the modern world from 1750-1918, it was a period of industrialisation and rapid change in the way people lived, worked and thought. Students will explore ideas about nationalism, imperialism and colonialism and understand how Australia’s constitutional development was shaped. This era culminated in World War 1, forcing deeper questioning about Australia’s form of government, its democracy, the rights of its citizens and the legal system designed to protect them.
Geography and economics and business
In this area of rapid population growth, climate change and globalisation food security is more important than ever and Geography is a tool used to help people understand change. Students learn about the impact of global connections in influencing economies, places, trade, tourism and people. Students will learn about resource availability, and economic systems, they will investigate Australia’s place within the global economy as well as their own role in managing financial risk.

Students will explore major historical events through the lens of the Western District, you will explore first contact between European settlers and First Nations people of the local area. Students will explore the role of Portland as one of the main ports during this time, you will explore the competing views of pastoralists and gold miners and consider how this influenced the Australian ideal. Physical geography
Students will explore the physical properties of Earth’s surfaces, and investigate the natural environment, and understand how this is formed. You will develop an understanding of how Earth was, and continues to be formed. You may look at seasons, climate, atmosphere, soil, streams, landforms and oceans, in your quest to understand the formation of the natural environment. This will support students who wish to undertake VCE Geography
Markets and money
Students will develop an economist's view of the world. Economics looks at how consumers and businesses behave in a market economy and how they make decisions. You will use case studies to develop knowledge and understanding of the role of markets. You will explore the nature of money and how and why goods are produced, distributed and consumed in society. This will provide a background knowledge for students who wish to undertake VCE Accounting or Business Management
Making and breaking the law
Students will develop an understanding of Australia's political system. They will investigate how political parties are formed and how they underpin democratic processes. Students will explore criminal and civil law and investigate Australian cases. They will explore the role of courts in adjudicating disputes. Students will explore the role of, and relationship between parliament and courts in developing law. This will support students who wish to undertake VCE Legal Studies

Cultural geography
Students will explore the interconnection between humans and the environment, and create geography inquiry questions to explain this relationship. Your money
Have you ever wondered where your money comes from? Or how to best manage your money? Do you use a mobile phone, have you considered the charges associated with your plan? In this unit you will learn about earning, spending, saving and investing your money, you will learn about taxation. You will investigate how to be an informed consumer, how to avoid scams and to shop safely online. This will provide a background knowledge for students who wish to undertake VCE Accounting or Business Management
Crime and punishment through the ages
The study of crime and punishment explores how society deals with those who commit crimes. You will investigate the different types of crimes through the ages and consider the evolution of punishment through the ages as we reach a ‘just’ society. You will look at the many factors that influence a person’s criminal behaviour. This will provide a background knowledge for students who wish to undertake VCE History or Legal Studies.

As future global citizens, it’s important that you’re now thinking critically about big concepts like the mysteries of creation and why we need to take action on climate change as stewards of the Earth. Social justice project
It’s time to put your faith in action by participating in a social justice project in our local community. As Catholics, we are called to care for our common home and protect our environment, uphold the dignity of every human being, and help those in need. This elective will look a little different each semester depending on the needs of our community. If you’re ready to get your hands dirty and show Hamilton that Monivae students are strong in faith, this is the course for you.

Compulsory Year 9
In Year 9 HPE students will cover topics such as mental health, drugs and alcohol, nutrition, sexual health, relationships and road safety. This is aimed at helping students make healthier decisions that will enhance their personal health and wellbeing. Practical activities covered range from swimming, T-ball/softball, tennis, catching and throwing sports, various kicking sports and soft-lacrosse.

The body is an amazing machine! In this elective, you will explore how the musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and energy systems work together to produce movement and adapt to the demands of exercise. You will study essentials of sports nutrition and understand the role of diet in maximising athletic performance. The role of physical activity, sport and society in developing and promoting healthier lifestyles will be examined. This subject will prepare you for further studies in VCE Physical Education.
Health and human development
This unit provides students with a broad understanding of health and wellbeing. There is a strong focus on the dimensions of health and wellbeing and development for youth and the various biological, sociocultural and environmental factors that influence these. Food and nutrition for good health and wellbeing is explored along with the key aspects of Australia’s healthcare system such as Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and private health insurance. Overall this is an exciting unit that prepares students for VCE Health and Human Development.
Outdoors and environmental studies
This unit leads into Years 11 and 12 VCE studies. Students will learn about different kinds of environments and how to interact sustainably with these through a variety of hands-on practical excursions. Students will explore the concept of sustainability and the importance of this for the environment, particularly as a potential response to climate change. Students should focus on sustainable practices in their own lives such as water saving and sustainable energy in their own homes. Topics will cover types of renewable energy, but also incorporate minimal impact strategies and codes of conduct, linking sustainable practices to practical experiences.

Wanting to develop your technique in the gym? Become more knowledgeable in the areas of male health and fitness with this minor elective. During your studies you will engage in a wide variety of practical sessions that focus around resistance training techniques, pilates, yoga, aerobic and anaerobic capabilities, as well as group fitness and how to properly recover to ensure you stay fit and healthy throughout your life.
Women's health and fitness
Want to gain confidence in the gym and develop your physical skills? Become more knowledgeable in the areas of female health and fitness with this minor elective. During your studies you will engage in a wide variety of practical sessions that focus around resistance training techniques, pilates, yoga, sport skill capabilities, as well as group fitness and how to properly recover to ensure you stay fit and healthy throughout your life.
Community and recreational pursuits
Most Australians live to relax by doing….nothing! The Community and Recreational Pursuits Unit aims to provide students with the experience and knowledge for effectively using “my time” to enhance wellbeing, social, health and fitness outcomes. Participants will engage in a wide variety of practical activities including cycling, croquet, yoga, lawn bowls, tennis, aquatic endeavours, racquet sports and simple fitness options.
Wide worlds of sports
Do you want something different to the usual sports such as football, cricket, basketball and netball? Then this unit is for you! This unit looks at the cultural ties to sport and delves into the sporting world from a global perspective where students will experience different and not so commonly played sports.
Outdoor and environmental studies: Land
In this unit, students will be discovering land-based environments and learning how to interact sustainably with these. Students will be looking at the technology and equipment involved in different outdoor activities including hiking, camping learning to cook on a Trangia. Students will understand how their activities impact the environment and learn strategies to lessen the impact we have on our surroundings.
Outdoor and environmental studies: Water
In this unit, students will be discovering water-based environments and learning how to interact sustainably with these. Students will be looking at the technology and equipment involved in different outdoor activities such as surfing, fishing and canoeing. They will visit and study different aquatic environments such as the Discovery Bay Marine Park and the Lower Glenelg National Park.

Music
Students will develop their skills and techniques on a variety of instruments and use those skills to perform as a member of a small or class group. You will explore how to play the music of others, perform as a member of a group, develop rehearsal techniques for your group and analyse a range of performances and contemporary styles of music. Students will compose music using both loop based and traditional notation and further develop musicianship skills.
Drama
Drama will give you the skills, confidence and self-esteem to explore, take risks and challenge your own creativity. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary drama through exploring and playing roles, and imagining situations, actions and ideas as drama makers and audiences. Painting will give you the skills in the use of paint and provide the time to practice painting techniques on your chosen material. Drawing
The Drawing major elective will help you transfer your stick figures into detailed and impressive drawings. You will gain an understanding of how to draw a portrait, draw in 1 and 2 point perspective, make items look realistic and 3 dimensional. You will look at artists who use both traditional and modern drawing techniques.
Communication design
This subject covers the three professional design areas of communication design, industrial design, and environmental design. It includes learning and applying technical drawing skills such as perspective and isometric drawings. You will learn how to work within a client brief and create both conceptual and constructed designs. This is perfect for anyone wanting to work in a Visual Industry such as Advertising or Design.
Sculpture and ceramics
This elective will give you the skills and experience needed to create, problem solve and construct works using a range of materials. Your projects will include clay hand building, installation, and interactive works, exploring materials including wire, paper and mixed media. You will end the semester with several artworks including colourfully glazed ceramics. This is perfect for anyone interested in a career in fine arts, engineering, or the construction industry.
Digital photography and Photoshop
Photography will include automatic and manual camera techniques using set lighting in a studio and outdoor environment. You will learn to compose an artistic photographic shot using design elements and principles and the rule of thirds. You will be able to explore your interests, as well as studying the works of other past and present photographers. This elective will teach you to use Photoshop, learning how to use this program to manipulate digital images to create and enhance your work. You will edit photos and illustrations and create digital artwork.
Performing arts
Music - The Performer
Music- The Performer will give you the opportunity to develop and explore the skills you need to be a confident performer on your instrument or voice. You will explore rehearsal techniques, develop skills on your instrument and harness performance nerves as you learn to perform to a range of audiences as a soloist and within a group. You will explore a range of music and performances and write music for your instrument. Perfect for those aspiring to undertake VCE Music and/or those who wish to be a musician.

YouTube. TikTok. Snapchat. How do these platforms inform how you view the world? This elective will explore the world of traditional and social media. You will study a variety of films from different genres and create your own short film. Along the way you will also create your own animation and research some of the issues in the media including media ownership and fake news. Perfect for anyone interested in a career in the film industry, radio, television or on social media.

Drawing
The Drawing minor elective will be a fun and exciting class directed at developing your drawing skills and creating a variety of finished works. You will enjoy using a range of drawing materials, developing line drawings into well rendered and realistic work. This is a great class if you have a love of drawing or simply want to develop and learn new skills.
Printmaking
The Printmaking major elective will get you starting up a small business, printing multiple copies of your work for sale. You will learn several printing techniques, including Lino, relief and etching. These will be printed using a printing press and we explore both traditional and contemporary techniques.
Performing arts
Film music and composing with technology
Have you ever wondered how the atmosphere is created in your favourite movie? The answer lies in the music. This elective will explore how music is used to create effect, atmosphere, establish a setting and reinforce the narrative. You will explore how to use sound effects, and loops and explore how to compose and create music using the latest apps and software. You will learn about the works of famous film composers and how they have influenced movie making.
Drama- The Musical
Do you want to take part in the Monivae Musical without having to step on stage? Did you know there are many roles you can take on that are behind the scenes? Think costume design, make-up, sound and lighting, set pieces, directing and many more. If this sounds like something you would be interested in then this subject is for you. Over the course of the semester we will work with the cast of the School Production to build set pieces, create costumes, design sound effects and even have a go at directing the show.
Podcasting
Podcasting is one of the largest growing media markets in the world. In this elective you will create your own podcast, on a topic and in a genre of your choice. You will use audio editing software to produce episodes of your podcast, focusing on voice production and techniques. By the end of the semester you will have produced and published your own podcast.
Concert band
If you enjoy playing in a concert band instrument, this elective will broaden your skills as a soloist and as a member of a group. You will extend your knowledge of concert band music and learn how to balance your part within the group. You will perform within a concert band, learn to lead the band and learn conducting skills and rehearsal techniques. You will use technology to arrange music for a concert band. Perfect for those who like to play in an ensemble and wish to advance their skill as a musician.

Compulsory Year 9
Wood - Tables
This unit assists a student further develop their skills and understanding of timber joining techniques, in particular a Dowel Joint, through the design and construction of a small “table” project. Students carry out ‘research’ and create sketches before using SKETCH UP software to produce fully dimensioned 3-D designs. Through the production of a design folio students develop effective communication skills and extend their abilities with client interaction.
Food
The Discover Food Technology unit incorporates the use of modern foods, new products and technologies in our everyday eating experiences. Our food world is changing at a very rapid rate and we look at the current trends and availability of what is in our local and wider communities. Fast foods, partially prepared products and convenience foods all play a role in meeting the demands of our busy lifestyle, yet are they good for us? Dietary issues are investigated in this unit, as are Food Laws and safety and hygiene. This unit is predominantly practical with experiments, individual and group activities, as well as health and food issues
Textiles
Students will use the Design Process to establish a client and subsequently create a unique product for that person. They will look at a combination of fonts, designs, logos, prints and more to design, produce and evaluate a garment/s with swing tags to meet set criteria. This unit is suitable for both male and female students as the students choose their own project. The skills involved are drawing, screen-printing, sewing, working with patterns, researching, decision-making and justification.

This unit is designed to further a student’s level of practical skill, and their understanding of creative processes, through design / construction of an ADIRONDACK CHAIR (or table). Students will look at the many design aspects possible, consider various options, selecting relevance to their particular situation, before creating their own chair/table. They research, create sketches, produce accurate plans and construct a scale mode
Wood - Cabinets
Cabinets are a part of our everyday lives. Storage for clothing, sporting goods, gumboots or maybe Dad’s vinyl LPs! This elective offers students an opportunity to create a small cabinet for their personal domain using plywood sheets, and learning the skills required to join sheet materials.
Wood - Dog’s life
“Man’s Best Friend” deserves to be spoiled, so ‘Dog’s Life’ gives students the opportunity to treat their furry-friend like a king. Students will research, design and create a comfy bed with their own personalised touch to best suit the needs, size, situation and personality of their own best friend. Using Sketch-Up 3D software and a Design Folio students will create a scale model, work on their designs and understand materials and processes required to create a bed for their pet. The aim is to encourage students to use creativity and enjoy the pleasure of seeing their personal designs come to life.

Food - Farm to plate
Farm to plate is a social movement. It promotes serving locally grown food at restaurants, cafes, school canteens preferably sourcing from the producers. It can be grains, seeds, fruit, vegetables, meat, fishery etc. It aims to a sustainable food system including food loss and waste prevention. Students will know what grows around our regions and how those ingredients can be sourced and used to make different food items suitable for school canteens to local restaurants.
Food - Multicutural / indigenous foods
Australia is a hugely multicultural country. Food functions as a universal language and illustrates the history and culture of the place and/or country it represents. Students will be introduced to different ingredients, foods and their origins from around the world and the sensory properties of different cultural foods. Students will also learn about Australian native ingredients and their uses. They will develop the skill of altering recipes to suit their own personal liking.
Textiles - Second time around
Textile waste is growing faster than ever before – our responsibility as a consumer is to play our part in reducing this concerning trend. This subject will look at why people throw their clothes away and how this impacts our environment and the world we live in. The practical part of Second Time Around will involve visiting local Op Shops and other venues where we can choose items that we will use to complete 2 main projects – one item of clothing that we upcycle and one item of soft furnishing that you can use in your bedroom. You will be able to use other items that you collect from home, the community and generally saving from being thrown out to add to your Op Shop purchases. Imagination, creativity and thinking outside the box will be required to design and create your upcycled masterpieces.

Wood - Pallet creations
Recycling is the ‘new normal’ so what could be created from an old pallet? Well the only limit really is your imagination! Craft magazines, on D.I.Y. TV we’ve seen everything, but what would your imagination encourage you to create? In this elective, students will be given the reins to dream up a project only using the materials from an old pallet (or two). Patio furniture, planter boxes, rustic shelves, almost anything can be created and for next to no cost. Repurposing, recycling materials, and considering the environmental benefits is our new normal.
Wood - Folio design
Think about it. Everything you use, everyday, has been designed somewhere by someone. Now imagine you have a career designing the products you love.
Within the Product Design Process there are those who ‘make’, but before that can happen there are those who DESIGN. This elective is about creativity, and working largely in the comfortable and cosy environment of the theory room as opposed to the workshop. Students of ‘Folio Design’ will be shown the ins and outs and all the tricks of what it takes to create a high quality Design Folio. Beautiful sketches, rendering techniques, graphic organisers, Sketch Up 3D plans, design briefs, time management charts and all the rest. While a more theoretical subject, students will also create a small project which they have designed in their planning portfolios.

Materials Metal - Sheetmetal
For those with a preference for working with metal materials this course allows students to learn about techniques and tools involved in shaping, bending and joining of sheetmetal as they create a tool tray project. This course is an excellent lead-in for those interested in pursuing an Engineering pathway offered at Monivae in Year 10.
Food - World BBQ
What is BBQ and Grilling? What makes barbequed and grilled food taste so good? World BBQ will assist students to learn all the reasons of a good BBQ. They will also learn how this method is used all around the world, how to create more flavour and taste to the food. The four main flavour profiles are most people familiar with are salty, sweet, tangy and spicy. In 2002 scientists officially recognized a fifth flavour is extremely relevant to BBQ is umami. To learn all the secrets – World BBQ is a starting point.
Food - Desserts
We eat desserts to make our lives more enjoyable and keep us in good mood. Students will learn how to make different types of desserts from different parts of the world by using different cooking and presentation skills and share with families and friends. Students will become competent in a range of increasingly complex preparation techniques and cooking methods, using a broad range of ingredients and equipment. Ingredients should be handled, prepared and cooked following safe and hygienic practices and pupils should be provided with opportunities to make choices and demonstrate creativity.
Textiles - Patterns for people
How to get the perfect fit! Make it in the colour you want! Get the satisfaction of making your own design! Making your own clothes offers up lots of choices for fabric colour, texture, pattern and design. This unit will give each student to opportunity to purchase a pattern of their choice and customise it to a personal fit, with their own fabric and extras. Learn how to adjust, alter and reproduce designs that suit you and are on trend. Learn the tips and tricks for pattern sewing and get the look you are after.
Textiles - Being crafty
Beads, buttons, crystals, leather, jewellery, accessories – the list is endless of craft resources and ideas. Designing and using your imagination to create your own masterpieces gives you pieces that you can keep, give away as gifts, share with others and the self-satisfaction of accomplishing a new skill. This unit will explore different techniques and mediums and you will then work on an individual project of your choice. Find your passion and expertise and then create a unique product.
Indonesian
Major(s)
The study of Indonesian contributes to student personal development in a range of areas including communication skills, intercultural understanding, cognitive development, literacy and general knowledge. Learning and using an additional language encourages students to examine the influences on their perspectives and society, and to consider issues important for effective personal, social and international communication. It enables students to examine the nature of language, including their own, and the role of culture in language, communication and identity. By understanding the process of language learning, students can apply skills and knowledge to other contexts and languages.
startUp
startUp is an exciting new program for Year 9s at Monivae. Students will be working alongside teachers for four periods per cycle (200 minutes a fortnight), and will engage with local and national businesses and mentors, including Monivae college alumni.
Term 1 will help students develop the organisational and study skills that will carry them through to Year 12.
Term 2 and 3 will focus on the future of Australian work, the changing skills necessary to get ahead, and entrepreneurial and enterprise skills.
Term 4 will continue to guide students through their Pathways into senior school and beyond.
Cadets
Cadets has a long-standing history at Monivae and has seen many students grow in self-confidence and further their leaderships skills during their time in cadets. From Year 9 – 12, students may remain in the cadet unit to continue their training as well as form part of the leadership group. For more information click here.
Monivae College Sports Academy
Monivae College Sports Academy (MCSA) will be offered for the first intake of Year 9s in 2022. This program allows eligible students to develop their skills and knowledge to achieve at elite levels in either Cricket or Basketball, with dedicated time within their timetable for specialist coaching and training.
